Tamarind (Tamarindus indica) Grows from Elephant Dung

Above pictures show that the tamarind seedling which passed the elephant's digestive system and is starting to grow as part of the elephant's seed dispersal program. Tamarindus indica L. is a tropical fruit tree which grows in dry/monsoonal climates. The fruits are usually between 5 and 14 cm in length and approximately 2 cm wide. The tree averages 20-25 m in height and 1 m in diameter, it has a wide spreading crown and a short, stout trunk. It is slow growing, but long lived, with an average life span of 80-200 years. Tamarind is a sustainable resource with positive environmental benefits. The tree provides perennial cover thus protecting the soil and aiding in the storage and recycling of plant nutrients and organic matter. It is most well known for its fruits which have a low water content and one of the highest levels of protein and carbohydrate of any fruit. The pulp is high in potassium, phosphorus and calcium, it also contains iron and a good source of the vitamins thiamin and niacin. The leaves contain vitamin C and beta carotene and the seed protein has a highly favorable amino acid content. Elephants and wildlife love to eat the tamarind fruit.

Hog Deer- cervus porcinus

Our field staff spies a young hog deer (Male) near camp 1. It is believed to be the offspring of the Hog Deer reintroduced to Sublangka Wildlife Sanctuary in 2006. The hog deer gets its name from the hog-like manner in which it runs through the forests with its head hung low so that it can duck under obstacles instead of leaping over them like most other deer. When alarmed, hog deer make a whistling vocalization or a warning bark. Home ranges vary widely in size, but average about 0.70 km². Harems are not created, with males courting and defending a single female at any given time.

Golden Jackal - Canis Aureus or Asiatic Jackal

Our field staff photographed a golden jackal or Asiatic jackal (Canis aureus) at Km. 2 in Sublangka Wildlife Sanctuary . The golden jackal is generally 70-105 centimeters (28-42 inches) in length, with a tail length of about 25 centimetres (10 inches). It's standing height is approximately 38-50 cm (16-20 inches) at the shoulder. Average weight is 7-15 kilograms(15-33 pounds) with males tending to be 15% heavier than the females. Jackals are a strictly monogamous species. They are very capable hunters of small to medium sized prey such as rabbits, rodents, birds, insects, fish and monkeys.

Hog badger - Arctonyx collaris Released at Sublangka Wildlife Sanctuary

The hog badger-Arctonyx collaris or หมูหริ่ง, in Thai, is preyed upon by tigers and leopards. However, they have a good defense system with their large claws and teeth, thick loose skin, and tenacity. Habitat loss is likely to have an impact on this species. Little is known about this species and human impact on them. Numbers are not known, and they may very well be near extinction in Thailand. The hog badger is now on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species.

Time Test for Elephant Digestive System

The foundation is testing about elephant digestive system by using tamarind seed pods. Firstly, we feed Pang Duh 5 times with tamarind seed pods and found that the tamarind seeds take an average of 30 hours before passing out in the elephant dung.

Comparison of Tamarind Germination -Elephant Ingested vs Uningested

The pictures compare between the germination of a tamarind seed that has passed the elephant's digestive system (left hand) and an uningested tamarind seed(right hand) .
Tamarind seeds from the same lot were germinated in regular soil and in similar situation. The difference was that some seeds were removed from the tamarind pods while some were collected from the elephant dung which took approximately 30 hours to pass through the elephant.
The difference in the growth rate of the tamarind plants is quite noticable.
(1)
(2)
Above pictures show that the tamarind seedling which passed the elephant's digestive system (1) can grow faster than the uningested tamarind seedling (2).
