Petter Granli meets some of the Foundation's field staff. They are no longer called mahouts or elephant keepers. Although their primary job is to look after the elephants, they have been retrained to work as field staff capable of various other skills to look after the various field operations tasks at the Sanctuary. The Foundation pays them a competive salary according to each's job knowledge and capabilities, and adjusted according to their yearly performance. The Foundation provides them with clothing & food allowance, provident fund for their retirement, health benefits and death insurance from AIA. For this past year 2005, some have been involved in germinating seedlings and growing wild grasses, wild cane and bananas. Eight have been responsible for building the foundation of the Sala Anek Prasong and the assembly of the structure with supervision from only one construction foreman. Two now have have working knowledge of a GPS and can read military maps. Most were involved with the construction of the holding enclosure for the hog deers. Some have received some training from the veterinarian to treat the wounds of the hog deer. Normally, they already treat minor injuries of the elephants. They now also have some experience with handling of the Asiatic black bear and wild boars. They assist in forest firefighting with the forestry staff. In 2004 they help build 23 check dams along the Lamsonthi. Camp 1 and Camp 2 were entirely built by them according to the plans and materials supplied to them.
