An unusual natural salt lick site was found in the trunk of The Lagerstreomia calyculata tree (Ta-Bak tree) near Lam sonthi creek when Pang Dao and Pang Deurn were feeding from the site recently. เราพบโป่งธรรมชาติใต้ต้นตะแบกใกล้กับลำสนธิ เนื่องจากพังเดือนและพังดาวกินโป่งไม่ยอมไปไหน

The map above show the sightings by our field staff of Pang Boonmee, Pang Malai and Pang Khammoonyai in Doi Pha Muang Wildlife Sanctuary area in September. All three elephants had been released by H.M. Queen Sirikit. (Pang Boonmee and Pang Malai released on January 14, 1997. Pregnant Elephant Behavior Study

With the purchase of Pang Sarah on September 28, 2006, we hope we can study the behavior of a pregnant captive elephant that is being reintroduced to the Mae Phon Sanctuary. Vet. Thaveepoke has conducted two hormone analysis which indicates that Pang Sarah's level remain high at the level that is usual during pregnancy. The former owner said that he has owned her for about a year after buying her in Surin. She is supposed to have been impregnanted by a seedor that is known as a breeder in Surin. We are checking to get the name and history of that seedor. To make things as natural as possible, we are letting Pang Sarah roam reasonably freely under the close watch of our field staff in Lampang camp. We want her to eat the plants that she wants, after being fed a monotonous diet by the former owner. Hopefully, she will get all the nutrients and vitamins she needs during pregnancy. During the first couple of days, she is eating a lot of bamboo shoots. Another part of the study should show the interactions Pang Sarah will have with the other elephants. It is known that other female elephants will gravitate and assist a pregnant elephant before, during and after parturition. Hopefully, if this happens we will be ready to record the interactions and activities. Already on the second day after arrival, Seedor Sombat has come to be acquainted with Pang Sarah. We have informed all the veterinarian and field staff to be prepared to assist, but in as much as possible we would like to see a natural and (humanly) unassisted birth. ตามที่ทางมูลนิธิฯ ได้จัดซื้อช้างพังซาร่าเมื่อวันที่ 28 กันยายน 2549 โดยมีนายสัตวแพทย์ ทวีโภค นายสัตวแพทย์ที่ปรึกษาของมูลนิธิฯ ทำการตรวจสุขภาพของพังซาร่า พบว่าพังซาร่ามีปริมาณฮอร์โมนที่แสดงถึงโอกาสในการตั้งท้องสูง จึงหวังว่าผลจากการตรวจวิเคราะห์ในครั้งนี้ มูลนิธิฯ จะได้ทำการศึกษาพฤติกรรมของช้างท้อง ซึ่งขณะนี้มูลนิธิฯได้นำพังซาร่าเข้าร่วมโครงการของมูลนิธิฯ ที่เขตป่าสงวนแห่งชาติแม่ยาว เจ้าของเดิมของพังซาร่าได้บอกกับเราว่า เค้าได้ซื้อพังซาร่ามาได้ประมาณ 1 ปีแล้วจากจ.สุรินทร์ จึงคาดว่าพังซาร่าน่าจะตั้งท้องกับช้างพ่อพันธุ์ที่เป็นสีดอขณะอยู่ที่จ.สุรินทร์ ซึ่งขณะนี้ทางมูลนิธิฯ จึงได้ทำการตรวจสอบชื่อและประวัติของช้างพ่อพันธุ์ตัวนั้นอยู่ และเพื่อให้ทุกอย่างดำเนินไปอย่างเป็นธรรมชาติมากที่สุด เราจึงปล่อยให้พังซาร่าได้อยู่อย่างอิสระภายใต้ความดูแลอย่างใกล้ชิดของเจ้าหน้าที่ภาคสนามจ.ลำปาง เพื่อพังซาร่าจะได้หาอาหารกินได้เองตามที่ต้องการและจำเป็นสำหรับช้างท้อง ไม่ว่าจะเป็นอาหารประเภทบำรุงหรือวิตามิน จากการสังเกตระหว่างช่วง 2-3 วันแรกพบว่า อาหารที่พังซาร่ากินส่วนใหญ่จะเป็นหน่อไม้ อีกส่วนของการศึกษานี้จะแสดงให้เห็นถึง ปฏิกิริยาสัมพันธ์ระหว่างพังซาร่ากับช้างตัวอื่นๆ ว่าช้างเพศเมียตัวอื่นจะช่วยเหลือและดูแลพังซาร่าทั้งก่อน ระหว่างและหลังการคลอดอย่างไรบ้าง มูลนิธิฯ หวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งว่าเราจะพร้อมทำการบันทึกปฏิกิริยาและกิจกรรมต่างๆที่จะเกิดขึ้น และในวันที่ 2 หลังจากพังซาร่าได้เข้ามาอยู่ในโครงการ สีดอสมบัติก็ได้เข้ามาทำความคุ้นเคยกับพังซาร่ามูลนิธิฯ จึงแจ้งเรื่องนี้ให้กับนายสัตวแพทย์ที่ปรึกษาและเจ้าหน้าที่ภาคสนามรับทราบ เพื่อเตรียมพร้อมในการช่วยเหลือ แต่ทั้งนี้ทั้งนั้นมูลนิธิฯ ต้องการให้ทุกอย่างดำเนินการอย่างเป็นธรรมชาติมากที่สุด

This is a new elephant that the foundation is considering to buy for Elephant Reintroduction Project. The elephant’s name is Pang Kham Pean. She is 30 years old, pregnant and has been looked after by Veterinarian Taweepoke Angkavanich at The Elephant Hospital. ช้างพังคำเพียร เป็นช้างตัวใหม่ที่มูลนิธิฯ กำลังพิจารณาซื้อเข้าโครงการคืนช้างสู่ธรรมชาติ มีอายุประมาณ 30 ปี ซึ่งในขณะนี้กำลังตั้งท้อง และอยู่ในความดูแลของนายสัตวแพทย์ทวีโภค อังควานิช ที่โรงพยาบาลช้าง ศูนย์คชบาลแห่งชาติ

Heavy rain on September 19, 2006: A lot of water flows into the area where the foundation changed the water direction. Elephant Breasts

Another similarity between humans and elephants: Of all the living things on this earth, the female elephant's pair of breasts is remarkably the most similar to the human female breasts. A newly born calf is able to suckle the milk from the breasts with his mouth and will continue to breast-feed for at least 2 years.
