Elephant Eyes- Stereo Vision and Independent Movement

Our newest elephant, Plai Maitree, looks straight at us. In this case, we would like to point out that although the elephant eyes are on each side of its head, the eyes are located at an angle that provides decent direct forward vision as seen above. Additionally, because the two eyes are located at a greater distance between each other, the elephant has better depth perception than man. Human eyes are about three inches apart while the elephant eyes are over 18 inches giving them better stereo vision. This can be noticed by the degree of ease that elephants can pick up objects and measure lengths of objects within their reach. We have observed elephants break tree branches according to the length required. We observed that the elephant can move its eyes independently, somewhat like a chameleon. So that it could move its left eye to follow me as I moved to his left, while its right eye remained fixed on the person standing on his right side. พลายไมตรี ช้างเชือกใหม่ล่าสุดที่มูลนิธิฯ ซื้อเข้าร่วมโครงการฯ กำลังจ้องมองเราอยู่ จากภาพนี้มูลนิธิฯ อยากให้สังเกตว่า ถึงแม้ว่าตาทั้งสองข้างของช้างจะอยู่คนละด้านของศีรษะ แต่เนื่องจากตำแหน่งตาช้างอยู่ตรงมุมจึงทำให้ช้างมีทัศนวิสัยในการมองตรงได้เป็นวงกว้าง ประกอบกับตำแหน่งของตาทั้งสองมีระยะที่ห่างกัน จึงทำให้ช้างมีการมองเห็นเชิงลึกดีกว่ามนุษย์ ดังที่เราจะสังเกตุได้ว่า ช้างจะสามารถกะระยะห่างในการหยิบจับสิ่งของที่เค้าต้องการได้อย่างง่ายดายและถูกต้อง

Our field staff found Hog Plum seedlings in an elephant dung that it will be a HogPlum tree soon. เจ้าหน้าที่ภาคสนาม(ลพบุรี) พบเมล็ดมะกอกป่าในมูลช้าง ซึ่งอนาคตต่อไปจะเป็นต้นมะกอกป่าที่เกิดจากมูลช้าง

Vetiver Check Dam-"Fai Faek"- Patent Pending

Our field staff complete the new check dam near Pa's Pond. The sand bags are filled with soil and fertilizer. Then vetiver grass is planted on the top sand bag. Water from the pond feed the grass to grow quickly in the sunlight. Our field staff attached an animal lick bar with tree for a small quadruped such as Hog deer, Barking deer and deer etc. nearby Lam Son Thi creek. ก้อนแร่ธาตุที่เจ้าหน้าที่ภาคสนาม (ลพบุรี) นำไปติดไว้ตามต้นไม้ใกล้กับลำสนธิ เพื่อให้สัตว์กีบขนาดเล็ก เช่น เนื้อทราย เก้ง กว้าง ฯลฯ ในพื้นที่ได้รับแร่ธาตุ

This elephant is Pang Nimnuan. We moved her from Mae Yao National Reserve Forest to nearby Mae Yao Reservoir, Pa Hua Toong guard station. Now she looks fatter than before. ช้างที่ทางมูลนิธิฯ ได้ย้ายมาบริเวณอ่างเก็บน้ำแม่ยาว หน่วยพิทักษ์ป่าหัวทุ่ง ดูอ้วนท้วนสมบูรณ์ขึ้น เช่นพังนิ่มนวล

Our field staff's lodging (camp 2) is nearly finish and some our field staff (Lampang) will move in to stay here soon. บ้านพักเจ้าหน้าที่ภาคสนาม (แคมป์ 2) ใกล้จะเสร็จแล้ว และพร้อมที่จะให้เจ้าหน้าที่ภาคสนาม (ลำปาง) เข้าพักได้แล้ว
