Elephant Sleep

Earlier photo: Shows that Pang Deurn has lodged the two broken tree branches into position and will move them into the appropriate position to create an elephant deep sleep alarm system. An Asian elephant sleeps from 4-6 hours a day. This is a good example of the elephant as a tool maker.
Photo shows the height of the tree where the tree was snapped broken by Pang Deurn. The answer to our question:" Why did she break the tree at that height?" should be that she wants the tree to be able to regrow new branches from that height.

Elephant Sleep/ Elephant as Tool Maker

Pang Deurn has broken a couple of branches of a tree and placed them in a position that they touch her back and face. Then she goes to sleep. It seems that this gives her comfort during her sleep, since she will know if she is losing equilibrium during her standing sleep. The leaves and branches will tickle or scratch her so that she will wake up. This observation came about when I asked the question:"Why did she break the tree at such a height? About 3 meters from the ground." The broken section was lying on the ground but she then wedged it in the Y of the tree trunk and used her trunk near the break to manuever the leafy end to rest on her back. There are two possible non exclusive answers to my question: First, she broke the tree at that height because she needed a branch that was the length of the break to the top of the tree. Two, she broke it at that height so that the tree regenerate and grow well from that point.

After he has eaten the meaty part of the banana plant he places the roots into the impression he has made so that the banana tree can regrow itself. Our field staff report that during the dry season the elephants will not dig/pull the whole banana plant from the ground, but will eat the plant down to the stump leaving the roots still intact in the ground.

We inspect Seedaw Boonchoo's dung which shows that he is not digesting his food very well, a sign of some physical problem. He is now on a regiment of daily vitamins, ripe bananas and health proteins. In any case, Seedaw Boonchoo seems a lot healtier than when he arrived.

We wonder if Pang Junpang is pregnant so Khun Premmjith, Khun Areerath and Khun Pantana buy the prostep to test it. P.S. Human pregnancy tests do not work with elephants because of the different hormones released. Our vet advisor, Chatchote or Mor Bic, has done extensive research on this : please see his report on this issue in his comment below.

Elephant's Purpose in Nature

One of the elephants performing one of Nature's given functions: removing vines that entangle and smother growing trees. Today we observed two elephants delicately and expertly grab and pull entangling vines that are wrapping small growing trees and eating them. To summarize our two year observations so far concerning the "Elephant as Nature's Gardener": 1. Elephants fertilize the forest with their dung. 2. Elephants plant trees and plants from the seeds in their dung. 3. Elephants trim the grasses so that seedling can grow. 4. Elephants knock down dead trees so that plant shoots will sprout and reach for the sun out of the shadow of the dead tree. 5. Elephants remove entangling vines from growing trees so that they will not be smothered.

Truely wild Plai Srisakorn touches Pa's hand. It is now six months since we moved Plai Srisakorn from the Mae Wong Forest. After a lot of loving care from our field officers, his temper is almost gone. However, recently he spied and charged a green colored motorcycle, leading us to suspect that the poacher who shot his mother may have also ridden a green motorcycle.

"Elephant Whisperer"- Khun Pichai exchanges secrets with Pang Deurn. This is part of the Foundation's Elephant Communications Program.

Our field staff have completely dismantled the Sala Anekprasong, and under Khun Bundit's caredul guidance the parts have been repacked in the containers and are ready to go.
