Today we visit the Salah Pra Wildlife Sanctuary to review their request for the Foundation to fund the digging of five water holes for wild elephants. Wild elephants have been moving into inhabited and farm areas. Some have been seen using the water ponds in cattle raising areas. To minimize conflict during periods of drought, their idea was to dig ponds in the center of the sanctuary. Some funding has been received from various parties (Baht 60,000), but the ponds would cost several hundred thousands because of the difficulty in transporting heavy machinery to the site.
After our review of the situation, we told them that making check dams along the running creeks would be a better solution. Check dams spaced along the creek according to the gradient of the water would provide water all along the winding route of the creek. Elephants and other wildlife would be able to have access to water throughout the area of the sanctuary. They would not be forced to eat food somewhere else and then travel to the central spot of the intended 5 water holes. Also animal quequing would not be necessary.
Check dams are much more economical and construction can start immediately with locally available materials such as bamboo trees and stones. Local labor can also be hired to help in construction to provide additional income for the nearby villagers.
The Foundation will provide monetary and other assistance to this revised project.
วันนี้เราเดินทางไปที่เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าสลักพระ เพื่อตรวจสอบการขอทุนสำหรับการขุดบ่อน้ำ 5 บ่อ ให้กับช้างป่าที่อาศัยอยู่บริเวณนั้นและใช้สำหรับการปศุสัตว์ ส่วนหน้าแล้งจะมีการขุดบ่อไว้กลางเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าฯ โดยเงินกองทุนนั้นได้รับมาจากหลายๆฝ่าย (60,000 บาท) แต่การขุดบ่อนั้นจะต้องใช้เงินประมาณหนึ่งแสนบาท เนื่องจากการเคลื่อนย้ายเครื่องจักรสำหรับใช้ในการขุดบ่อน้ำเข้ามาในบริเวณเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าฯ นั้นเป็นไปได้ยาก หลังจากตรวจสอบสถานที่แล้ว เราได้ให้ทางเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าสลักพระตรวจสอบทางกั้นน้ำและระหว่างของทางกั้นน้ำ เพื่อใช้ในการกักเก็บน้ำตลอดลำห้วย เพื่อให้ช้างและสัตว์ป่าอื่นๆสามารถใช้น้ำในเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าฯได้โดยไม่จำกัดการหาอาหารและน้ำแค่ในบริเวณบ่อน้ำที่ขุด 5 บ่อ การทำทางกั้นน้ำนั้นใช้เงินทุนน้อยกว่าและสามารถเริ่มทำได้ทันที โดยใช้วัสดุในท้องถิ่น เช่น ไม่ไผ่ ต้นไม้ กิ่งไม้ หรือหิน รวมทั้งยังสามารถจ้างคนงานในท้องถิ่นมาทำการก่อสร้างได้ ทางมูลนิธิฯจะจัดการด้านการเงิน และความช่วยเหลือด้านอื่นๆ สำหรับการก่อสร้างครั้งนี้
