Makok Pah( Hog Plum) for the Hog Deer

On Saturday we went to retrieve 2 sacks of Makok Pah( Hog Plum) fruits and 3 sacks of Dried Makok Pah seeds from the Wildlife Propagation Center in Huay Sai, Hua Hin and had them delivered to the Sublangka Wildlife Sanctuary. On Sunday Parichat and our field staff laid some of the makok pah fruits in the wooded section near the helicopter pad area. Within ten minutes, Parichat reported seeing at least 4 Hog deer come out to eat the fruits. She said that now they are very cautious and shy, and will flee into the forest at any sound or movement by human beings. As we suspected when we went to relocate the Hog deer from Huay Sai last year, we saw a large number of makok pah trees in the Center and determined that a lot of them must have been grown by the deer. Therefore we hope that the Hog deer in Sublangka Wildlife Sanctuary will eat the makok pah fruit and grow them there too. The total cost for the experiment was over Baht 8,000 for gas and labor, including a donation to Baht 2,000 to the Huay Sai Center. We think it is well worth it, if the makok trees start to grow in Sublangka.

เมื่อวันเสาร์ที่ 6 มกราคม 2550 ทางมูลนิธิฯ ได้รับผลมะกอกป่าสดจำนวน 2 กระสอบและเมล็ดมะกอกป่าตากแห้งจำนวน 3 กระสอบ จากสถานีเพาะเลี้ยงสัตว์ป่าห้วยทราย, หัวหิน ไปส่งที่เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าซับลังกา และในวันอาทิตย์ คุณปาริชาติ จันทร์ครุฑ เจ้าหน้าที่ประสานงานประจำสำนักงานเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าซับลังกา จ.ลพบุรี และเจ้าหน้าที่ภาคสนามของมูลนิธิฯ ได้นำผลมะกอกป่าที่ได้มาไปหว่านไว้ในบริเวณใกล้ๆกับลานจอดเฮลิคอปเตอร์ พร้อมทั้งเฝ้าสังเกตุการณ์อยู่ประมาณ 10 นาที พบว่ามีเนื้อทรายจำนวน 4 ตัว ออกมากินผลมะกอกป่า จากการสังเกตุพฤติกรรมของเนื้อทรายพบว่าปัจจุบันนี้เนื้อทรายค่อนข้างจะระมัดระวังตัวต่อคนแปลกหน้าและสิ่งแวดล้อมรอบด้านมากขึ้น ทำให้ยากแก่การเข้าถึง โดยเมื่อปีที่ผ่านมาทางมูลนิธิฯได้เข้าไปที่สถานีเพาะเลี้ยงสัตว์ป่าห้วยทราย และพบว่ามีต้นมะกอกป่าจำนวนมากที่ขยายพันธุ์โดยเนื้อทราย ดังนั้นทางมูลนิธิฯจึงหวังเป็นอย่างยิ่งว่าเนื้อทรายในเขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าซับลังกา จะเป็นตัวที่ช่วยขยายพันธุ์ผลมะกอกป่าให้เจริญเติบโตได้ดีอย่างที่สถานีเพาะเลี้ยงสัตว์ป่าห้วยทรายเช่นกัน โดยในครั้งนี้ได้มีค่าใช้จ่ายในการขนมะกอกป่าประมาณ 6,000 บาท อีกทั้งทางมูลนิธิฯ ได้บริจาคเงินให้กับทางสถานีเพาะเลี้ยงสัตว์ป่าห้วยทรายเป็นจำนวนเงิน 2,000 บาท รวมเป็นเงินทั้งสิ้น 8,000 บาท (แปดพันบาทถ้วน) ซึ่งทางมูลนิธิฯเล็งเห็นว่าเป็นการคุ้มค่าหากว่าผลมะกอกป่าจะสามารถเจริญเติบโตได้เองตามธรรมชาติในพื้นที่เขตรักษาพันธุ์สัตว์ป่าซับลังกา จ.ลพบุรี
