Khun Sivaporn Dardarananda, Secretary-General of Elephant Reintroduction Foundation and The Foundation staff visit a wild 5-month-old baby elephant at Khao Phatap Chang Ratchaburi Province.  The story: A farmer near Saiyoke Karnchanaburi found the baby elephant abandoned by its mother and herd. Attempts by the farmer to return the baby to the herd failed. The farmer then gave the baby to Wildlife officials who brought the baby elephant to be taken care of at the Prathap Chang Wildlife Breeding Station at Rajchburi.  The baby was found on Dec.5, 2008. Originally, it was thought to be a male elephant and given the name of Plai Mongkol. After ten days at the station it was discovered that the baby was a female elephant.

The condition we found at the Station:  The baby elephant is looked after by the same caretaker as "Khun Chai". He is the person who claims that he discovered that she was female from the way she urinates. It surprises us that the veterinarian in charge was not able to determine the elephant's sex from the beginning . We saw plaster strips on the elephant's ears and remarked about them. We were told that the elephant was given an intravenus glucose solution at the ears becasue she was very weak.  Three to four veterinary students Technology Mahanakorn University at Ratchburi were at the station observing the elephant and recording notes. For the day the elephant had diarreria for the forth time during the time we were there. We checked and discovered that the caretaker was feeding it with baby formula "Enfagrow" which contains milk protein to which elephants are allergic to. The baby elephant is not in the company of elderly female elephants who could help take care of her. Baby Wild Elephant as Material Evidence to the Crime is a Crime

"Khun Chai", approximately 2 and a half year old baby elephant , is held at the Prathap Chang Wild Life Breeding Research Station in Ratchburi. We learned that the baby elephant has been held here for almost two years as material evidence in the case of a person illegally possessing wildlife. The elephant was taken from Pang Chang in Hua Hin under suspicion that it had been poached from the forest rather than being the offspring of a captive elephant. While the legal case slowly proceeds, the baby elephant , which is a living thing, does not get the proper care and treatment that it deserves. As you can see from this photo below, the elephant has developed bowed legs possibly from the lack of proper nutrition. Also we noticed that this elephant has been the sole elephant in this location and does not have the company of other elephants. Psychologically this elephant seems to have problems. He doesn't know if he is a dog or what. This is a case of the injustice of the legal system. While the laws help prevent elephant and wildlife poaching from the forests, the actual legal process and regulations may actually impost greater injustices on the victims. "คุณชาย" ลูกช้างวัย 2 ขวบเศษ ที่สถานีเพาะเลี้ยงสัตว์ป่าเขาประทับช้าง จ. ราชบุรี เป็นช้างของกลางที่ได้จากการจับกุมของเจ้าหน้าที่ป่าไม้จาก ปางช้างที่หัวหิน ขณะนี้อยู่ในระหว่างการดำเนินคดี ลูกช้าง"คุณชาย" ได้รับการเลี้ยงดูมานานกว่า 2 ปี ที่นี่ ซึ่งเริ่มมีขาที่โก่งเนื่องจากไม่ได้รับแคลเชียมและสารอาหารอย่างเพียงพอ เราสังเกตุเห็นความโดดเดี่ยวและการที่ไม่ได้อยู่ร่วมสังคมกับช้างตัวอื่น

Mor Taweepoke Angkwanit DVM., Advisor Veterinarian of Foundation cure the wound at Pang Nongnooch's tail from Maggots Infestation. After that our field staff bathe the wound every day.

นายสัตวแพทย์ทวีโภค อังควานิช สัตวแพทย์ที่ปรึกษาของมูลนิธิฯ เข้าทำการรักษาหางของพังนงนุช เกิดจากโรค "Maggots Infestation" หรือชื่อทางภาษาไทยเรียกว่า "โรคหนอกไช" ซึ่งเกิดจากแผลที่ผิวหนังเกิดการอักเสบและมีแมลงเข้าไปวางไข่ไว้ทำให้แผลติดเชื้อ ซึ่งในขณะนี้เจ้าหน้าที่ได้ทำการล้างแผลให้กับพังนงนุชทุกวัน

Released elephant : Pang Kammoonyai was found in the thick forest, she is look good and healthy.

MOU

The Foundation has signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the Elephant Reintroduction Foundation and the National Park Wildlife and Plant Conservation Department at Chaipattana Foundation on December 15, 2008.

Elephant owner...Khun Thongdee Buranasombat (The second from left) would like to donate "Pang Boonsom" which belongs to her family for many years to the Foundation for releasing back into the wild. We are going to transport her from Kanchanaburi to Lampang on December 20,2008.
